John the Submariner
John was a submariner during World War II which always amused us because he was well over 6 foot. He lived a few doors down from me, and I would often see him strolling from the shops wearing his beret and I’d always get a hello. Once he even brought over a letter that had been intended for me but had ended up at his house.

He moved away a few years ago to somewhere more manageable. I missed having him around.

Then today someone appeared at our door asking if we knew whether John had been buried or cremated. Apparently he died in February. He'd been happy in his new home, but had fallen and broken his hip. He didn't recover.

Rest in peace, John.
